History of the Lenny Face
The original Lenny face ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) first appeared on the Finnish imageboard Ylilauta in November 2012. It uses combining diacritical characters to create its distinctive "eyes" and a special Unicode letter for the "mouth." The face quickly spread across the internet, appearing on Reddit, 4chan, Twitch, and eventually becoming one of the most recognized text emoticons worldwide. The name "Lenny" has no specific origin and was simply adopted by the community.
Types of Text Emoticons
Classic Lenny faces use combining diacritical marks above parentheses to create the signature suggestive or mischievous expression. Variants include winking, heart-eyed, and sunglasses versions.
Table Flip emoticons depict a person flipping a table in frustration. The most famous is (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻, often followed by the polite response of putting the table back: ┬─┬ノ(°_°ノ).
Shrug emoticons express uncertainty or indifference. The classic shrug ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ uses the katakana character "tsu" for the mouth and macron characters for the raised arms.
Disapproval faces express judgment or skepticism. The look of disapproval ಠ_ಠ uses Kannada script characters for its distinctive eyes.
